Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public hospital(s). Main source(s): National Institute Cardiology in Warsaw, Poland Background Weight control is a major risk modifier for coronary artery disease. However, the effect exerted by individual body mass components on plaque may not be uniform. Low-attenuation noncalcified (LAP) has been recently identified as an independent predictor cardiovascular outcomes [1]. Purpose To determine relationship between changes composition and LAP burden. Methods 89 participants Dietary Intervention to Stop Coronary Atherosclerosis Computed Tomography (DISCO-CT) were enrolled into analysis (40% women, mean age 60±7.7 years). Patients with non-obstructive (stenosis<70%) atherosclerosis confirmed computed tomography angiography (CCTA) qualified conservative treatment randomized (1:1) intensive diet lifestyle intervention atop optimal medical therapy (OMT) versus OMT alone over 66.8±13.7 months [2]. Body (BM) including total fat (TBF), skeletal muscle (SMM), visceral cell (VCM), extracellular (ECM) measured at baseline follow-up (InBody S10 analyser, South Korea). burden was defined volume <30 Hounsfield units divided vessel volume, expressed %. Changes compared serial CCTA scans (QAngioCT, Medis Medical Imaging Systems, Netherlands). Results Reduction BM significantly higher experimental (∆BM=-3.6±4.9 kg) vs arm (∆BM=-1.4±2.9 kg; p = 0.016) so reduction TBF (∆TBF=-4.2±5.3 kg ∆TBF=0.2±4.3 kg, respectively; p<0.001). SMM increased 0.4±2.6 decreased 1.0±2.1 (p 0.006). No significant interarm differences observed VCM ECM. (∆LAP=-0.42±1.4% ∆LAP=-0.03±0.45%, 0.078). In entire study population, positive correlation revealed (r=0.45, Multivariate regression model incorporating investigated only component associated (table). Conclusions decrease due reduction.

Automated three-dimensional quantification of noncalcified coronary plaque from coronary CT angiography: comparison with intravascular US.

PURPOSE To determine the accuracy of a previously developed automated algorithm (AUTOPLAQ [APQ]) for rapid volumetric quantification of noncalcified and calcified plaque from coronary computed tomographic (CT) angiography in comparison with intravascular ultrasonography (US). MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was approved by the institutional review board and was HIPAA compliant; all patients ...

High coronary plaque load: a heavy burden.

Hydroxymethylglutaryl (HMG) CoA-reductase inhibitors, or statins, play an important role in the primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. By inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, statins lower the production of cholesterol in the liver, resulting in lower LDL cholesterol levels. Besides lowering cholesterol levels, statin therapy slows down plaque progression and in some pa...
